BEST PLACE TO SPOT THE NEXT JIM CARREY: ALTdot COMedy Lounge
In this city's ultra-competitive comedy scene, the Rivoli's Monday-night ALTdot COMedy Lounge is one of the most reliable. And unpredictable. No wonder folks like Janeane Garofalo, Will Ferrell and Tom Green have dropped by to check out talent and (perhaps) do a set. A-list names aside, though, the joy in going to the ALTdot has always been discovering new talent and seeing comics try out new material. The pay-what-you-can admission doesn't hurt, either.

"Where can fans of spaced-out, off-the-wall, over-the-edge, even grotesque antics get to witness Scott Thompson, or the trio of Janeane Garofalo, Will Ferrell and Harland Williams -- or live-gig greenhorn Tom Green -- get up on a tiny stage and jam? At Lorne Perlmutar's dream come true, the Rivoli's wild and wacky weekly ALT.COMedy Lounge."
Now Magazine, 01.07.99

"In the past year, Dave Foley and Scott Thompson, both former Kids in the Hall, have appeared there. Thompson chose the venue to premiere his new Buddy Cole show. That evening, the Rivoli had to turn away more people than it let in to see Thompson's rendering of an over-the-hill vetern of the gay scene."
The Globe and Mail, 09.14.98

"... as evidenced by Sean Cullen, and the frequent presence of scouts from The Comedy Network, Just For Laughs, the Aspen Comedy Arts Festival and Saturday Night Live, it's a room to discover real talent. Maybe the next Seinfeld."
Toronto Star, 01.07.99

"Recently, hundreds lined up around the block for hours for the appearance of TV personality Tom Green, whose cult appeal drew the powerful crackle of rock-star heat to the room."
Toronto Star, 01.07.99
"Since its inception, this showcase of stand-up comics, troupes, and improvs has drawn packed houses only too happy to pony up the pay-what-you-can cover charge."
National Post, 01.18.99

"Next stop: TV? It may be the only logical progression, since it's hard to imagine ALT.COMedy Lounge getting any farther by word of mouth."
Toronto Sun, 01.11.99
